About the practice

We started this practice because good therapy got rare.

Inner Compass was founded in 2017 in a one-room office above a flower shop on NW 23rd. Today we're twelve clinicians, two floors, and the same conviction: slow, well-matched, deeply human therapy still works. And it should be available to people who don't think of themselves as "in therapy."

Our story

From one room to twelve clinicians. Slowly, on purpose.

Dr. Rebecca Sun spent the first decade of her career inside a large managed-care system in Seattle. She liked her clients. She did not like the fifteen-minute med checks, the productivity quotas, or the fact that nobody on her team had time to think about a single case for more than five minutes.

In 2017 she moved to Portland and opened a one-room office above a flower shop on NW 23rd. The plan was simple: see fewer clients, see them for longer, and actually have the cognitive bandwidth to do good work. The first six months it was just her, a worn leather chair, and a steady stream of word-of-mouth referrals.

A practice grown by invitation, not ambition.

Maya Nakamura joined in late 2018 because Rebecca's couples referrals had become a waitlist. David Hartwell came next. Rebecca's old grad-school cohort-mate who finally got tired of his hospital job. Each clinician since has come the same way: someone in the practice knew them, trusted their work, and watched them deliver.

We've turned down acquisition offers. We've turned down growth capital. We've turned down opportunities to "scale" into a five-state telehealth brand. None of those things would make the therapy better.

What we actually care about now.

Match quality. Session length. Continuity of care. Time between sessions to consult on hard cases. A quiet waiting room that doesn't feel clinical. Insurance that doesn't dictate clinical decisions. Sliding scale that actually slides. A team small enough that we know each other's clients by first name when we co-treat.

We are not interested in being everywhere. We are interested in being good here, for the people who find their way to us.

What we believe

Five quiet convictions that shape every session.

We resist the urge to put these on a poster in the waiting room. But they're real, and they're what makes Inner Compass feel different the first time you sit down with us.

i.

The match is the intervention.

Methodology matters, but the relationship between you and your therapist matters more. We invest disproportionately in matching well.

ii.

Time is a clinical resource.

Forty-five minutes is the floor, not the ceiling. We resist the industry pressure to compress sessions or shorten the work.

iii.

Therapy is for regular people.

You don't have to be in crisis to deserve good care. Some of our best work happens with clients who "just wanted things to be a little better."

iv.

We consult, always.

Every clinician here meets weekly to discuss complex cases. With consent, with structure, with no ego. You benefit from the whole team's thinking.

v.

The practice stays small.

Growth is not the goal. Good therapy at a sustainable scale is. We have turned down growth offers and will continue to.

vi.

Money shouldn't gate access.

We protect sliding-scale slots every month and absorb the financial impact ourselves. It's a small thing. We do it anyway.

From a former client

"Therapy used to feel like a thing I had to perform well at. At Inner Compass, for the first time, it just felt like a conversation that quietly changed me. Eighteen months later I'm not sure I'm the same person who walked in."
